Wireless Networks

Wireless / WI-FI (wireless fidelity) uses radio technology to connect computers such as, laptops, desktops and PDAs, to each other and to the internet without wires or cables. Once connected, users can share files and projects as well as resources such as printers and broadband Internet.

Users of laptops or PDAs can 'roam' around their office yet still maintain access to printers, broadband Internet and other computers.

In short, wireless / WI-FI networking gives you freedom. Freedom to roam, freedom to grow, freedom to stay connected wherever you are.

What range can be expected from a wireless / WI-FI network?
Various factors affect the range that can be expected when using a wireless / WI-FI network. These factors include walls, furniture and other interfering radio devices. However, in an open space with no obstructions, it may be possible to connect to a base station at acceptable speeds as much as 500ft away. Acceptable speeds will vary, depending on the activity you are performing, such as surfing the Internet, sending and receiving emails or watching a hi-resolution movie trailer in the garden.

The maximum range and performance of a wireless / wi-fi network can be improved by experimenting with the location and positioning of base stations and antennas on individual devices. In certain cases, additional antennas may be required to improve range and performance.

How secure is a wireless / WI-FI network?
A wireless / wi-fi network can be as secure as a wired network if the right precautions are put in place. Typically, most wireless base stations are purchased with security turned off, as this makes them easier and quicker to set-up and configure. Once installed and working, security should be turned on to stop unwanted visitors to your network and confidential data.
